Sinking funds calculator:
what to set aside each month
List what you save for ahead of time. Add the target, the month it is due and what you already have. You get the monthly amount for each fund and your total. Runs in your browser; nothing is saved.
Sinking funds, briefly
What is a sinking fund?
Money you put aside a little each month for an expense you can see coming: car insurance, holiday gifts, a trip, annual subscriptions. When the bill arrives, the money is already there.
How the monthly amount is worked out
Target minus what you have saved, divided by the months from this month to the due month (at least one). A 1,100 bill due in 7 months with 380 saved needs about 102.86 a month.
Sinking fund vs emergency fund
An emergency fund is for what you cannot predict. A sinking fund is for what you can. Most budgets need both.
